Choosing the Right Options in Bedside Drainage Bags

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Many different conditions can force patients to make use of bedside drainage bags. However, you will need to know how to choose the right options, whether you are a patient or are purchasing for a medical facility.

The most important aspect of finding the right drainage bags is choosing a professional medical supply company. The supply company should offer you a wide range of top quality drainage bags, catheters and other sampling/disposal equipment for your needs. In addition, they should provide you with the ability to purchase in bulk or to purchase items singly if required.

When choosing bedside drainage bags, it is important to know the features that you need. What features might such a bag offer? How do you know what the right options are for your needs?

First, consider the attachment method.Does the drainage bag offer single or dual hook hangers? While one hanger is all that is required, dual hangers offer greater stability and support for the bag.In addition, you should determine if the bag has an anti-reflux valve – this will keep the urine from exiting the bag after draining.

Another consideration is the size range that the bags come in.While you can certainly opt to purchase different brands in different sizes, it’s simply more convenient to purchase the same brand in different sizes. Some bedside drainage bags are available in 2,000cc or 4,000cc configurations, which ensures that you are able to purchase the right bags for your application.

Finally, you should consider shipping.Does the medical supply company offer free or discounted shipping? Is there a minimum order amount that must be placed in order to take advantage of a reduced rate? You’ll need to answer these questions before you can purchase any bags or other medical supplies that you might need.

Exercising the Knees

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

From youth to old age, knee exercise is necessary to maintaining strength and mobility. In our younger days, movement is simple, as the knee hasn’t taken much abuse.

As we get older, activities like walking and climbing steps become more strenuous, for many reasons. Check with your GP before doing any of these exercises. The kind of knee exercise that is best for you depends upon your age. Younger folks can be more assertive, while older people should be reasonably gentle. Whichever age group you are in, start out slowly. For both old and young, start by slowly but resolutely walking around. The cardinal rule of knee exercise is no rebounding. After walking around for a little while, you should be heated up enough to start some stretches. If you do not want lie on the ground, return inside. Stretch yourself out, then get in a snug position in which your higher neck and back are supported. Placing a pillow under both knees, slowly lift one leg up, bending the knee a bit. Go on with the other leg in the same fashion. The result may be thigh muscles so sore you cannot walk without discomfort. If you are young, use knee exercise to avoid issues later in life. When finished warming up, it’s time to start your knee exercise. In the initial few days, legs and knees could be sore, but which will depart. Start by doing a light jog, about ten yards. This “wakes your knees up”, as well as bolstering knee muscles. Take a short rest, rubbing the knees to chill them. Now, lying flat on your back, slowly pull your knee back to a point halfway up your belly.

Return the leg to the first position, then repeat with the other leg.

Old or young, start out slowly, with peaceful, steady motions. Remember, rebounding is the worst enemy of the knee.

Don’t exhaust yourself, or you risk days of agony or perhaps long term damage. Just keep up your knee exercise program, and shortly you will be a fitter you.

What Is Hernia

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Hernia is a condition where there is an abnormal protrusion of internal organs through an abnormal opening in the wall of the cavity. A combination of increased pressure inside the body with weakness in the wall is responsible for this condition. In this condition, internal organs or parts of organs are protruded out forming a swelling which will increase the size with coughing and lifting weight, and while passing stool or urine.

What are the causes of hernia?

  1. Weakness in the body wall due to:
    Congenital weakness
Acquired weakness due to injuries, muscle wasting, suppurative lesions in the wall and presence of weak natural openings, obesity, lack of exercise and sometimes repeated pregnancy
Surgical operation with improper suturing or sepsis of operated site
  2. Increased pressure inside the body due to:
    Chronic constipation
    Recurrent cough
    Weight lifting
    Stricture of urethra

What are the common sites for hernia?

  1. Inguinal hernia. Here the abdominal contents protrude through the inguinal canal (passage in the lower abdominal wall just above the inguinal ligament. It is seen on either side). This type is common in males.Initially the swelling comes only while straining and goes back while lying down.
  2. Femoral hernia. This type of hernia is more in females. Here the abdominal contents pass through the femoral canal which is seen just below the junction between the thigh and lower abdominal wall(Inside the femoral triangle). The contents pass downwards and comes out through saphenous opening in the thigh and forms a swelling under the skin.
  3. Umbilical hernia. This is common in children. The umbilicus is the weaker part of the abdomen. The contents of the abdomen may protrude as a bulb like swelling while crying and defecating.
  4. Incisional hernia. These hernias are seen in operated sites due to improper suturing or sepsis.
  5. Epigastric hernia. It is a rare type where the herniation occures in the epigastrium.
  6. Lumbar hernia. This is also a rare type. Here the hernia appear in the lumbar area on either side of the lumbar spine (in the lumbar triangle).
  7. Obturator hernia. This is a rare type of hernia. Here the contents pass through obturator foramen in the pelvic bone.
